Should I Call The Doctor When Someone Has A Fever?
A fever is an indication that something unusual is happening in the body. It is the immune system's natural response to a threat like an infection, and it may not be necessary to treat the fever at all. In fact in some cases, treating a fever may actually prolong the illness. However, there are some cases where medical recommendations may be needed.
In order to give your doctor as much information as possible to help him decide on a diagnosis and treatment, take the temperature of the patient at regular intervals, and record the readings. This can be difficult if the patient is sleeping a lot, as you won't want to disturb them. And if you are worried about their condition, and trying to keep them comfortable, it is possible you may forget to write down the temperature readings.
Take the stress out of this necessary task by using a non contact infra red thermometer such as TempIR. It can be used even when the patient is asleep, as you just need to hold it 3 to 5 cms away from the forehead to register the temperature. And as TempIR can record the last 32 readings, you never need to worry about writing anything down.
A temperature higher than 103 F (39.4 C) may present a threat to health, so it's advisable to call a doctor, especially if the patient is a young child, or is undergoing chemotherapy. A very high temperature could indicate a serious infection.
If a child is irritable for no apparent reason, refuses to eat or drink, has problems with breathing or becomes lethargic and unresponsive, seek medical recommendations. A fever combined with these symptoms could be an indication of meningitis. If it is caught early, it is much easier to treat. When a child is under two years of age, do not allow the fever to continue for more than 24 hours before calling the doctor.
In the case of older children, a fever will not normally stop them drinking, responding to you and playing. However, if the child develops a rash, experiences breathing difficulties or is vomiting or in pain or severe discomfort, the doctor should be called. And if the fever lasts for more than three days, it's time to seek medical recommendations.
Adults can develop fevers for all sorts of reasons, such as heat exhaustion, excessive exercise, menstruation, or even following vaccination. As in the case of children, there is no real cause for alarm unless other more severe symptoms present along with the fever. Often, rest and plenty of fluids is all that is necessary to bring down the fever naturally.
Monitor the temperature so that you can accurately describe the progress of the fever to your doctor. The TempIR Non Contact Infrared Thermometer can record up to 32 readings quickly and accurately, leaving you free to keep the patient comfortable. And as the thermometer is non contact, you can easily take the patient's temperature, even when they are resting. This gives you peace of mind if the temperature is stable, and alerts you to problems if there is a sudden increase, taking a terrific deal of the stress out of caring for sick family members at home. Every home should have a TempIR Thermometer.
